Welcome to Portree Angling Association

Neil Cameron 2009.2.9 19:59

Welcome to our new web site. I hope you find it interesting and informative. and aren't the photographs something else? There is plenty information on the site but if you require something a bit more detailed leave a comment and some of our members will get back to you. We are a small club conscious that we have something really special here with some of the best scenery in Scotland and, given decent conditions

exceptional fishing. Whether it's trout or salmon fishing that interests you we have something suitable for all levels of expertise and fitness.

We have a Wheelyboat for disabled anglers on Storr Lochs.

We invite your comments and suggestions and if you come to fish we would like to hear your experiences.

All the best

I would just like to comment on your new website - it looks great, the photos are remarkable and it is very informative. I really like the link to the maps of the lochs.

I look forward to coming up to Skye and throwing a cast!

Re: Welcome to Portree Angling Association

I'm 50 and live near Epsom. Over the last 20 years my wife and I have had many lovely holidays on Skye. We have had particular fun fishing on your Staffin and Brogaig rivers.

I've caught finnock on the Staffin and got a 2lb sea trout to rise to my fly in very low water and seen a seal ' fish' 10 yards from where I'm fishing at it's outflow.

I really prefer the Brogaig above the cemetry where we have fished what is really just a small burn and usually fish with 2 or 3 flies but always a coachman though i have occasionally used a worm. On a more recent visit taking a client on his first ever days fishing after a very basic 10 minutes coaching he managed to catch 9 brown trout to 10 inches in 3 hours. He even managed to foul hook a 12 incher! For my 3 hours I hooked and returned circa 50 trout often 2 at a time!

The Brogaig is probably my favourite river - pity it's such a long way away from me!

I've never caught anything bigger than a 3/4lb here and never touched a sea trout / salmon ( not over bothered ) but would be interested to hear your members views of this river?

Kind regards

Colin Reid

Re: Welcome to Portree Angling Association

Colin,

Good to hear you continue to have great sport on the Brogaig River.

An occasional problem at the mouth of the river is caused by gravel and stones on the beach building up due to wave action closing the mouth of the river to migratory fish. There are sea trout to be caught if the mouth is open to the sea and the occasional salmon.

The club are looking at ways to keep the mouth open but there is a lot of gravel moved by wave action at times.

It may be of interest to you the fact that this past season has been very good for salmon and sea trout. I hope you remember to put in a return to the secretary, whose address is in the web site

Re: Welcome to Portree Angling Association

Och Hullo, Neil and members, really good site am impressed, heading back to the Hebrides after an adventure in Espana(nae decent fish and chips or black pudding) and all the decent rivers are in the north, decided to go a wee bit further north to Lewis

From your PDF report it would seem you no longer stock the Storr lochs so my old job as "the fish father" is redundant, did any one ever catch "micheal" tight lines PAA .

Re: Welcome to Portree Angling Association

David,

Good to hear from you.

Fish going in this year!

I thought it a bit extreme leaving for Spain just to get away from your true vocation-

looking after fish. The club had just about survived in the interim.

Hope Lewis suits, it perhaps won't be as warm as Spain but the people are friendly

All the best

Neil

Re: Welcome to Portree Angling Association

Jim,

Sorry about your experience on the River Lealt last year. Poaching is a problem we as a club are trying hard to deal with. I hope you reported the net at the time and action would have been taken to have it removed. It is not really helpful having a moan on our web site a year on.

All rhe best

Neil

Re: Welcome to Portree Angling Association

Hello ,i fished the storr lochs on friday 16th of july and was blown off the water which can happen to anyone. My gripe is that icould not pick up my permit until 9 o clock in portree and by the time igit to the loch andgot set up it was after 10 when istarted fishing.A small point, maybe but perhaps you could devise asystem of collecting the permit earlier so that we cold be fishing at 9 o clock

Re: Welcome to Portree Angling Association

Tommy, Sorry you had a bad experience collecting your permit. We as a club will look at this and see if we can improve the situation. Permits for bank fishing can be collected ahead but when keys are involved its not easy.
